They've started to be a more common option and I'm seriously considering one for the next (still-distant) computer purchase. Has anyone here tried using a touch monitor with Orion?

Moving the sliders around this way seems like it could be awfully convenient.

Really? Not from where my monitor is situated on my desk. You will also have to contend with  GUIs that were never designed for that, your hands getting in the way of what you are looking at and greasy finger marks on your monitor. No thanks, I think a mouse is a far better device for interacting with a computer. Perhaps if someone starts doing multi-touch tablets, but the best place to look at your monitor is not the best place to have it if you are going to be touching it all the time.

I agree - you would need to have the monitor where the k/b is. Sore neck coming.

We have had a few ipods and iTouches through the workplace recently, the iPhone from the sample department has the ABL app installed and it is a fucking pain to use due to size - and I have very small hands.  The iPad is a bit easier but no music apps to try out there.....i find the whole thing gimmicky.

Long live the mouse......

The trackball was invented by Tom Cranston, Fred Longstaff and Kenyon Taylor working on the Royal Canadian Navy's DATAR project in 1952. It used a standard Canadian five-pin bowling ball. It was not patented, as it was a secret military project.[3]

Independently, Douglas Engelbart at the Stanford Research Institute invented the first mouse prototype in 1963,[4] with the assistance of his colleague Bill English. Engelbart never received any royalties for it, as his patent ran out before it became widely used in personal computers.

I can swipe my monitor with impunity - my fingers are greaseless and leave no visible marks. The coatings on most I've seen further prevent nastiness from sticking. I also wouldn't be using it at your desk - mine's got plenty of space to put monitors in easy reach (it should be noted I use a multi monitor setup anyway - I could just as easily put it on a VESA mount that swings out from under my desk for just this).

I don't know how well Orion will swing with this, but stuff is happening alright.

I suspect there will be lots of things advancing at the tablet market aside from the Ipad. Acer and Asus are both coming out with affordable options, which are bound to become more and more inexpensive as production rates increase. Jazzmutant Lemur still holds popularity in some circles I would reccon, even though the Ipad might render it obsolete as far as "bang for the buck" is concerned. Nanostudio and similar programs (http://www.blipinteractive.co.uk/index.php) for the Iphone is still somewhat gimicky, but given that this is a new field, I think it might explode in the next few years.

Seems like a lot of expense effort to do something you can basically already do with a $30 mouse. How would you right click, middle click or do what a scroll-wheel does on screen? I've used Cintiq tablets - I was really excited at the opportunity to demo them at SIGGRAPH when they first came out [2003, I think] but I found that even after 3 days of using them 3 or 4 hours a day, I couldn't wait to get back to my trusty Intellimouse Explorer. And that was for doing graphics work, which is much better suited to that kind of interaction.

I've been considering trading up my 17" secondary for a bigger widescreen. The prices have come way down, and typically monitors are heavily discounted when buying a computer (which I'll be doing in the next couple years when the price drops even further). And with multitouch, I'd be able to move several sliders (as opposed to 1 with the mouse). Currently, I use a TriggerFinger via MIDI for this, but if I can cut out one piece of equipment by upgrading, so much the better.

I'd get a cheap Behringer control surface before I'd dink with a multitouch monitor! Now, a multi-touch PAD like the one Apple came out with, that might be far more ergonomic and useful for constant interaction with on-screen knobs and sliders...

a multi-touch tablet (not tablet pc, but like a higher end Bamboo type tablet) would be interesting if the pressure sensitivity counted for individual mouse clicks per finger.
What I mean is pushing down harder would be the same as holding the left button down, per finger (think of moving faders simultaneously with 8 fingers)

This is close to what I had in mind to the OP, tho it is a different host.  Not the Ipad is what I mean, but not thinking in the sense that you're actually putting your hands up to a vertical lcd monitor.

It doesn't make me shit my pants, but it's nice (and yes there are OSC control apps already out)
I figure mice will be gone 5 years from now, let alone using 1 cursor...
but hey, who hasn't had to take a shit while doing a set?  This would be handy :hihi:
