Putting the rules here so you don't have to read the entire thread:
--- THE TOXIC 3 CHALLENGE ---
1) Create a patch in Toxic 3 2) Make a single pattern that uses it in Orion (with no accompaniment) 3) Stream it to a file 4) Upload your clip to: http://soundcloud.com/groups/the-toxic-challenge
You can enter up to 5 clips, and you can revise them before July 16th.
Please keep the length <64 for the pattern, and it is encouraged to record parameter automation to exercise the patch as a performance instrument.
Zircon is going to judge the patches based on which is the most interesting, creative and musical.
If you don't know who Zircon is, go here and give a listen: http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/zircon
The winner will be announced July 16th*, 2010 and will receive:
1) Set of custom waves by Mark Holt to use with Toxic 3 (or any synth that supports custom waves) 2) Synapse VST plug-in of their choice courtesy of Richard 3) The winning patch will be included with Orion 8
*Zircon has picked the finalists are they are: A Fly In My Drm (dr. synth) Cloud9 (dr.synth) Bass toxic III preset (eklectro)
Honorable mentions are:
Melting IceCaps (Trancemaster1339 / mark_van_schaik) Cloudbusting (Monty Mo/DaZoid) ElectricCowDog (Gino Cortesi)
A winner will be selected from the finalists once Zircon has the FXP file for each, and can test them out.
We can debate any rules in this thread and I'll re-edit this post.
Best regards,
Gino

Original post....
So I think i know a thing or 2 about designing sounds with Toxic 3, and that means I need to be slapped with a harsh dose of reality.
Here is my idea. We pick a soft synth (Toxic 3), and a target sound. The target would be a patch that another synth can do that would be difficult to reproduce in Toxic 3.
Once we settle on the challenge (with some moderator help! ) we set a deadline 1 or 2 weeks out and see who can make the best.
What are the prizes? Well at this point, only bragging rights.
Who are the judges? Hopefully it could be by a poll so we all would be,
Any interest is this?
Best regards,
Gino

sounds like fun. but why not just let people design THE BEST TOXIC 3 PATCH and make a competition out of that. Allowed should be Orion's native effects and one pattern (A1).
I would love to go for that.

Opening it up would be cool.
Maybe just specify a category like lead, pad, keys, bass, or effect.
it would be a nice way to see and learn what's possible.

Gino

I can provide a prize of a one-off unique not available to anyone else set of wave cycles that can be used in Toxic 3 as oscillators or LFOs if you want.

I think BEST should do it. Otherwise it's too complicated. I don't think that it would be a very big thing here in this forum. So, keep it simple. Otherwise, 20 people judgeing 25 categories would just not work.

That sounds great Mark!
@DaZoid, I'm fine with simple, THE BEST TOXIC 3 PATCH. The only rule is that you create it.
How about we vote Friday July 2nd?
And if anyone else wants to offer prizes, feel free to do so
Best regards,
Gino

An attempt at the rules so far:
1. Create a patch in Toxic 3 2. Make a pattern that users it (A1) 3. Stream it to a file 4. Upload it somewhere like soundcloud.com so everyone can hear it. 5. Upload the FXB so people can have the patch.
@DaZoid I removed the use of 1 native effect but if you feel strongly I could be convinced.

Richard, you are SUCH the man!. Very cool, and thanks for the support!
That puts the due date on July 16th.
Best regards,
Gino

No, I'm fine with it. Only Toxic's internal effects. Makes sense.

What about upping the limit of entries to 4 or 8?

Hey, I just checked this post out. Cool! a Toxic programming challenge. Even though, it is not my favorite Toxic 2.5 I'm in. Man, only one patch that can be anything? What will I do?
Also, thanks very much for the good words.
I do have a question though. Does the pattern we submit only contain the submitted preset, or does this allow an accompaniment? For instance, if you made a lead could you also provide a drum pattern in the posted sound demo? I'm just trying to clarify the rules not recommend something. Too often I miss some of the rules and don't understand my options. Personally, I'm all for only that sound in a short clip that highlights a melody or bassline (which is probably what was insinuated, and I was too dense to see).

Just to clarify, the custom waves will be usable for any VSTi that can import wave files not just Toxic 3 (there will be text versions as well that can be used with Synthmaker VSTi's and AIFF versions), e.g., Z3ta+. They can also be used to build wavetables for WaveFusion and I'll be looking at the format so that they can be used in Alchemy. They will all come as 256, 512, 1024, and 2048 sample files in each format.

suecae_sounds - you click on the button with the disk image on the Orion toolbar over the vst then select save as program type of Cubase fxp or fxb. I know it looks confusing because the synth has its own preset patch selector as well.

No side instruments. Pure preset only with internal Toxic 3 effects. 1 Pattern.

I better prefer to add in v8 all presets what were made, not just one. like a orion user bank or something. i would use it. Now i'm not using Toxic. But winner preset would with BIG letters or something, just to everybody know that that one is a winner. Well, what's your'e opinion?

im going to start tweaking this evening, it will possibly be a pad or some strings.
I will set the pattern lenght for 64 @ speed 120.
@Reny:
That's a nice idea, BUT it is a contest so i think only the winner should be included in Orion8. Off course everyone should be able to download al entries in Preset format or even "Style" wich i use often for saving a preset.

This is getting really cool!
@Succae - Hi, You can export one patch by clicking the save icon and using FXB. So you can have a folder of FXBs that your working on, and then organize them into a preset bank (also in the save command).
@Shadx - 1 is a reasonable start, and if we have a successful contest we can modulate the next one
@Trancemaster - 64 or less for the pattern length sounds good. We want to keep the focus on the patch.
@Omac - I agree with DaZoid on this one. We only want 1 instrument without accompaniment. However in the pattern you could do chords or whatever you want.
@Reny - If we make a lot of cool patches, that's a good problem to have I'm sure we could pool them together and post them to Orion Reloaded. Name them something like "Rings of Orion" or what have you.
@Mark - Can you help me figure out how we could do the judging/voting? Can we create a sticky poll or something that has links to all the entries?
Best regards,
Gino

Sorry, if I seemed as if I was proposing something that I wasn't. I was seeking to clarify the rules. I have Asperger's which causes me most of the time to be on a different page than everyone else. For this reason I seek to clarify as much as possible. Some things that are obvious to everyone are not to me.
"Personally, I'm all for only that sound in a short clip that highlights a melody or bassline (which is probably what was insinuated, and I was too dense to see)."
The last part of my post was meant to say that I prefer just the one preset with no accompanying instrument in the clip, but that I didn't see that question had been dealt with. It was probably insinuated, but once again, I don't normally get implied things and must ask. I just like to know the rules to know the structure that I have to work with. I've already started working on my entry. I will do several and pick the best one.
